金剛生駒紀泉国定公園の奈良県葛城市と大阪府南河内郡太子町にまたがる位置にあり,頂上が標高517mの雄岳と474mの雌岳でできており,居住区から近く里山の環境が残っている山です。二上山の南には,竹内峠や平石峠が隣接し,南約6kmには葛城山があります。さらに南には金剛山があり,北側には屯鶴峯と寺山が隣接します。二上山は,コナラやモチツツジを主とする落葉樹林とスギ,ヒノキ植林,アラカシを主とする常緑樹林が混生しています。
Mt. Nijo is 517m high above see level and situated in North-West side of Nara prefecture (N34.5,E135.7). Much of the forest in Mt. Nijo is a mixed forest of coniferous and deciduous trees such as cryptomeria , hinoki cypress and Japanese oaks.
Around summit of the mountain, we see many kinds of trees, Quercus serrata(konara), Symplocos prunifolia(kurobai), Ilex pedunculosa(soyogo) , Lyonia ovalifolia (nejiki) and so on, in the evergreen and deciduous mixed forest where is coverd with many kinds of herbs and ferns on the forest floor. If we walk down the summit, we see many ferns, Microlepia marginata(fumotosida), Coniogramme intermedia(iwagane-zenmai), Pteris cretica(oobano-inomotoso), Dryopteris erythrosora(benisida) and so on, which grow on the planted forest floor where we see many trees, Chamaecyparis obtuse(hinoki), ocupaied a canopy and some kinds of evergreen low trees, Castanopsis cuspidate(tuburajii), Quercus glauca(arakasi), Aucuba japonica (aoki), Cleyera japonica (sakaki), at shrub layer.
I walked several mountain pathes to study the flora of vascular plants in Mt. Nijo . Ferns of 93 species and herves of about 400 species were found.
